Homelab adventures in upgrading to 6.0 Update 2

Upgrading difficulties in the homelab lead to a unique answer.

VMware released vSphere 6.0 Update 2 this past week and as one that likes to check out new technology, of course I wanted to update my homelab. Only problem was I had a host that was acting up. It ran fine and had VMs that ran fine on it but it would not update. First I tried to update through vCenter Update manager. It would attempt to install until about 99 percent then fail out.

First I tried to upgrade my host using esxcli. I turned off my firewall first with esxcli network firewall ruleset set -e true -r httpClient then ran this to upgrade to vSphere 6.0 Update 2:

esxcli software profile update -d https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-depot-index.xml -p ESXi-6.0.0-20160315001-standard

I ended up with this error:

 [NoMatchError]
No image profile found with name 'ESXi-6.0.0-20160315001-standard'
         id = ESXi-6.0.0-20160315001-standard
Please refer to the log file for more details.

So then I tried applying the profile by running the following:

 esxcli software profile install -d https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-depot-index.xml -p ESXi-6.0.0-20160302001-standard

I was thinking I could just install the profile to the host. That didn’t work either. I got the following error:

 [InstallationError]
 The installation transaction failed.
vibs = No ImageProfile found for live image
Please refer to the log file for more details.

So two strikes on getting this troublesome host updated. I tried several combinations until I finally ran this:

 [root@esx3:~] esxcli software vib list
Name Version Vendor Acceptance Level Install Date
----------- ------------------ ------ ---------------- ------------
tools-light 6.0.0-1.26.3380124 VMware VMwareCertified 2016-01-16

Notice, it only showed one vib installed. So this is not looking very good. I am thinking at this point, I may have to just reinstall ESXi. I run this and it really makes me want to do more research.

[root@esx3:~] esxcli software profile get --rebooting-image

Then I checked the log by running this: [root@esx3:~] cat /var/log/esxupdate.log. It showed that I needed to get a host image profile installed. After doing some research, I finally got it to work by running this:

[root@esx3:~] esxcli software profile install -d https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-depot-index.xml -p ESXi-6.0.0-20160302001-standard --no-live-install --ok-to-remove

Which resulted in this:

I rebooted my host and after it rebooted, my host was updated to vSphere 6.0 Update 2 and I finished getting my homelab upgraded. It took some time to research my options but in the end, I was able to avoid building it from scratch and was able to use esxcli.
